Sunday afternoon at Matthew Flinders Performance Centre saw a fabulous show put on by Oriana Choir. Pop Royalty, featuring pop music classics by some of Pop Music’s greatest performers, was a triumph. It was a joyous feast for the ears, the eyes, and the souls of the near capacity audience, who clapped, cheered and sang along with gusto.
The much acclaimed and highly accomplished Oriana Choir – the Sunshine Coast’s very own world-class vocal ensemble – together with the marvellous Sunshine Coast Youth Choir, the superb Oriana Band, led by keyboard virtuoso Scott Gaedtke, and all directed by the inspirational Elisabeth Wallis Gaedtke, gave the rapt audience over two hours of some of the greatest songs of our lifetimes, performed with passion and consummate professionalism.
This terrific show features songs originally performed by, and forever associated with, many of the singers who, over the years, have truly earned the right to be considered part of the ‘Royal Family’ of pop(ular) music. Nat King Cole, Elvis (The King) Presley, Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, The Artist Formally Known As Prince, John Farnham, Australia’s own King of Pop; and many others – Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Sting, Taylor Swift, Madonna, Rick Astley, Adele, Ed Sheeran, and more – all eminently qualified to be considered part of pop royalty.
Choral performances were interspersed with uniformly superb solo offerings, highlighting the amazing number of highly talented individuals within the Oriana membership. It’s wonderful that so many can step out from the ‘chorus line’, deliver a brilliant solo performance, and then melt back into the whole ensemble – a true measure of teamwork.
The songs are accompanied by some spectacular choreography, and the musical support from the Oriana Band is sensational, and totally in sync with the spirit of the songs and the singing.
If you weren’t able to be at Matthew Flinders on Sunday, don’t despair. The show is coming to The J in Noosa this coming Saturday, March 28, for two performances at 1.30 and 7.30 pm.
Pop Royalty really is something special. It’s an experience that will lift you up and make you feel great. If you saw last year’s The Piano Men, or 2024’s Dancing Queen, it’s a foregone conclusion that you will love this show. As Molly would no doubt say, ‘do yourself a favour’, and book a ticket. You’ll be so glad you did.
